Songkahakomar School

Songkahakomar School (School for Rescued Children), located in Preah Vihear Thom Temple of Rong Domrey Village, Ba Phnom District and in other pagodas throughout Cambodia, was initiated by Supreme Patriarch Tep Vong of the Kingdom of Cambodia. This school was established to educate children in January 10, 2002, with approval by the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Education Youths and Sports, and the authorities in all levels. Founded in 2002, the Songkahakomar is a nonprofit public school without discrimination on the basis of race, religion, national or ethnic origin, socio-economic status, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.

Mission

Songkahakomar is a nonprofit public school dedicated to improving opportunities for the youth and rural poor. This is to bridge the gap between the rich in the urban areas with the poor in the rural areas and to transform small villages literally into global villages. This process can link these villages interactively with generous people around the world who are contributing to broaden the knowledge of the next generation of leaders of Cambodia.

Accomplishment

The school has not seen any remarkable achievement yet. However, the children are eager to be educated. Our accomplishments are:

  • We created a contribution box called Songkahakomar Rescued Children Box. When the national or Buddha Holidays are celebrated, the people gather at the temple and give offerings to the monks. After that, they put the money into the box to help the school. This is the reason that the school is still open.
  • The children get involved in all the classes. They are very eager to learn, especially in English and computer classes.
  • We managed to purchase two second hand computers.
  • We got support from the Nokor Phnom Khmer Homestay Program.
  • We got occasional support from the travel company, Great Asia Tours Cambodia (www.greatasiatours.com ).
